Black Rock

Black Rock is a beachside suburb located around Half Moon Bay 18km from Melbourne’s Central Business District Victoria Australia on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay. At the 2011 Census had a population of 5,944.

The suburb was named after Black Rock House which was built in 1856 by Charles Hotson Ebden, who made his fortune in early Melbourne real estate.

Early European inhabitants were fishermen, who, like the Boon wurrung people before them used the freshwater springs of Half Moon Bays cliff base. Black Rock took on the character of a Beach Resort in the 1880’s dotted with many summer residences. The very first Surf-Life saving club in Port Phillip Bay was built in Half Moon Bay in 1900.

Another characteristic of the Black Rock shoreline is Red Bluff, named because of its oxidized iron in the cliffs giving off a burnt orange color.

1924 saw Sandringham City Council purchase the remains of the 19th-century battleship HMVS Cerberus which created a breakwater on Half Moon Bay. A prominent landmark of this beach side suburb is The Black Rock Clock Tower. This is a four-sided public clock erected on a tall brick structure at the intersection of Beach Road and Balcombe Road.

Boutique fashion shops, restaurants and cafes dot this beachside suburb. The local Golf course is The Royal Melbourne Golf Club which has hosted many Australian Opens and is one of Melbourne’s major Australian golf courses and recognized around the world.

Primary schools within the area are Black Rock Primary and St Josephs Primary.

What we like most about Black Rock is:
Tapas Bars, Shopping strip with fine dining, stunning beaches, Half Moon Bay beach with beach front restaurant and fish ’n chip cafe. Landmark Red Bluff Sand Cliffs.
